It seems that we have all made similar mistakes when it comes to search engine optimization and ended up with horrendous rankings. Our goal was to build an awesome website with all the right elements that would put it at the top of the page only to find out we are nowhere to be found. If this has ever happened to you or you simply do not want to repeat the mistakes of others this article will give you tremendous insight into the do’s and don’ts of search engine optimization.

The More Links the Better!

Yes, links are definitely a good thing if they are relevant links and the way you go about them is in compliance with the search engine algorithms. Mistake #1: Beware of low quality links that are not relevant to your website. If the search engine detects junk links then you will get junk rankings. It is better to have link to ten highly relevant sites than a thousand sites. Type your keywords into a search engine and try to create link relationships with the top ten search results.

The search engine bots run on mathematics and they know how to analyze anything that is not a picture (for now) and they can determine your websites fate in milliseconds. Spiders may be blind to images, but they are not blind to domain names, the number of keywords on your site and the relevance of the domain and keyword on sites that are linked to yours. If you link to a site that is a ‘link pharm’ you will get penalized because the spider will think it is a site you own that you are using to boost your search results.

Stuff the Turkey Not Your Website

Are your pages literally stuffed with keywords throughout the content to the point where you have sent your reader into oblivion trying to understand the content? This is a real search engine optimization no-no with the search engine bots because it is considered to be keyword spamming. What’s worse is you will lose your visitors as soon as they arrive at your website because they have to work to decipher the content.

When writing your content limit keywords to less than 2% of your total content and you should stay well within the guidelines of the search engine optimization rules. This means that you can use the term in the domain, in the title, the description, in each paragraph (in different tenses) and in the resource box if it is an article. Violation of this rule will get you sandbagged by the search engine and the customer, this is really insane, yes?

More Products Does NOT Equal More Sales

While it is true that back-end products will increase your income, you must first build a relationship with your visitors so they will trust your recommendations. If you do offer products they should be relevant to your main product. If your site looks like a flea market of unrelated products your visitors will see you as out for a quick buck and your rankings will plummet with the search engines because your site lacks focus. Instead your site should be serving a specific highly targeted audience.

I Know! I’ll Grab Their Attention with Lots of Cool Graphics and Animation!

You will lose more than two third of your visitors with fancy sites that are loaded with flashy intros and tons of graphics. Most people are searching the internet for quality information or a solution to a problem. Your visitors are not looking to be impressed by your ability to create fancy animation. In fact most people do not have the plug-ins required to play flashy websites and serious researchers and buyers usually have the images function turned off so the sites load faster. Search engines are really finicky about images so use them sparingly. So, the final rule is keep it simple stupid, The KISS principle is very relevant when is comes to search engine optimization.

Four important rules for proper search engine optimization: Relevant links, appropriate use of keywords, limit product selection and keep your site simple. These four rules can determine whether you will succeed or fail in the business of internet marketing, ignore them and you will prove that you are in fact insane.
