Websites can be looked up on Yahoo, Google, MSN etc., with ease, what’s difficult is getting to know where to begin so that your website can be among those that are looked up through these search engines. These tips should help you. If you are redesigning, do not abandon old domains/websites for new domains or don’t try to redirect the old domain to the new domain. Search engines place great importance on the age of the domain. A decision for a new domain could mean loss of traffic for weeks, months or more.

Your target audience and not the search engine should be the base for you to optimize your site. The target audience are people who type keywords in the search engine, search box. If you are sort of hazy about who your target audience are, look for demographic info online or visit forums, various sites and communities where you target audience hangs out and get information to use for your copywritting and research on key words.

Tools like Wordtracker or Google’s Keyword Tool can be used to research in finding the optimal phrases. Keywords like ‘hotel’ or ‘vacation’ are general and do not indicate what your site is all about. Don’t use these kind of words. Navigation and architecture on your site should have various categories of keyword research. For instance, imagine you sold toys, the site visitors should be able to look up your products and services by specific age (toys for a 2 year old), by various types of toys (preschool, soft toys), material (wooden toys / battery operated toys)etc. The key to your keywords is categorization.

Your site cannot be searched by search engines nor can your forms be filled by it. In fact it cannot read menus and javascripts as well. HTML links on the main navigation of all the pages that link to the site top level pages and then from there link to individual products and services pages are of great help. Click-able portions should not have links that read ‘click here.’ Site visitors must not find out what is in store for them when they click on the ‘click’ portion. Describe what they will find with graphic links and text.

While writing alt attributes and anchor texts be descriptive about the page by using main phrase keywords. Your copy must be filled with keyword rich phrases and yet make site visitor connect emotionally. Search engines place a lot of weight on Title tags. Include the keyword phrases from your copy in your Title tag. This information will be seen in the search engine as your site’s click-able link. It should be a combination of keyword phrases that are used for search and accurate reflection of the contents on the page.

One of the critical components of successful optimization campaigns on search engines is the linking of other sites to yours. Make sure to provide high quality, useful information. While trading links do not link your site with lousy ones. Do not concentrate on ranking, instead concentrate on increasing traffic, conversion and sales on your site. If you think that by adding new content, your site will prove to be more useful, go ahead and do so. But add only relevant information not fluff.

I have found that free classified ads can be a great tool for helping with hits and sales and selling products and services online. Classifieds and ads are the future of listing products online.
